On the class wiki site, post your favorite new Web 2.0 tool that has not been covered in detail in this class that you have discovered in this course or elsewhere. List the URL, what the tool is, and why you find it useful using the wiki template page. No duplication allowed-each page must be an original new tool. This can be done after reviewing the Unit 9 material, which covers more Web 2.0 resources.
Describe in detail what the site does, what service(s) it provides, and how it does so. In addition, cover the following items in your description in narrative form.
The web 2.0 resource I have selected is TodaysMeet. This service allows you to quickly set up a running "blog" or "wall" that only your students can comment on. What is nice about this service is that the students can join the group and post quickly; much like a social media setting. The teacher can have the entire "wall" shown on a smartboard etc. and the rest of the students can easily see what each other is writing. To join a group you setup, students simply need an unique link or code that the site will provide for you when you create your group. To post, students simply need to type what they want to say and hit enter. The service is free and requires no sign-up, but it is easier if you have an account if you plan on using it frequently. You can upgrade to a paid account of $5/per month for their Teacher's package which allows you:
I have not seen any ads that on the page, other than the upgrade option. In my estimation, I think that this tool could be used by both teachers and students in any classroom at any level. This tool is very simple and user friendly, if you can type, you can use this service.
Does it have ads?
Does it allow sharing of content and collaboration? if so, how?
Does it have a specific section for teachers and students?
Is it appropriate for use in schools?
Is it appropriate for use by students? If so, what grade levels would it be appropriate for, in your estimation
Educational Uses of Site
This service allows students to quickly and perhaps anonymously discuss topics mainly as a whole group. In my estimation, I think that this tool could be used by both teachers and students in any classroom at any level. Teachers could use it to hear, quickly, from students who do not want to share vocally or are simply to lazy to raise their hand. The teacher could pose a quick discussion or understanding question to make sure students are on the same page without only hearing the answer from one student. The only caution I have is that I haven't figured-out out how to control the names of the students if you do not upgrade your account. Students get to select who they are posting as, this may cause some issues.
Review of Site
I will be using this service more once my students have a 1-to-1 computer basis. When I have used it, it has been for informal questions and discussion of the main topic at hand. I have not had any real issues so far. The only caution I have is that I haven't figured-out out how to control the names of the students if you do not upgrade your account. Students get to select who they are posting as, this may cause some issues. I would like to see more control and added "touches" like images integration, etc. in the future. Overall, I like the quick access and simply posting for students.
